Long-Tailed Widowbird- Nakuru, Kenya

Taken this weekend in Lake Nakuru Park, this Long-Tailed Widowbird has, to me, always been associated with unspoilt tall grasslands. During mating season when not dragging it's outrageous tail around just above grass-top height (often hovering against a mild headwind), it can be seen briefly as it reapeatedly leaps into the air a foot or two above the grasses- packing down a ring-shaped dance floor in the process.

Burchells Zebra- Masai Mara, Kenya

I can imagine how predators might get confused by a mass of moving stripes! And stripes also serve to repel biting Tsetse flies I'm informed.

Balloons- Masai Mara Kenya

A typical Mara dawn scene. Hot air balloons with a capacity of up to 20 passengers tracking along the Mara River. These are some of the largest commercial balloons in the world. Fortunately, wildlife have become accustomed to their looming presence and occasional dragon's roar of flame. Calm morning conditions allow flights from first light (06:00) to around 8 AM.

Mara River Crocododile- Masai Mara Kenya

A Mara River 'Gnu-Eater' seen on this weekend's safari. This Nile Crocodile is at least four meters long and would weigh in the region of 750kg. Waiting patiently for the wildebeest migration, due by the end of July.
