Cheetah with Reedbuck kill. Masai Mara Kenya

Taken this weekend in the Mara, this mature female cheetah was enjoying a feast of Reedbuck when I happened by. Three solitary cheetahs we seen in a single morning in the Mara Triangle- I assume the population is healthy- there's certainly plenty of plains game.

This is what elephant dreams must be made of- during the other half of the year when conditions are hard and dry.

Flamingos- Lake Naivasha Kenya

Greater Flamingos in Little Lake, off Lake Naivasha late last year. Rainfall patterns influence the plankton grown in several Rift Valley lakes influencing mass movements from one lake to another. Lake Natron remains the favoured breeding location during most years. This lake is only an occasional home- possibly more of a resting point in between the primary lakes in the chain.

Hyena pup, Amboseli Park Kenya

This small handful of hyena was found having a morning lie-in at the main hyena den near the park airstrip. This is in an area that is subject to occasional flooding- hence the white alkaline soil.

Eland- Nairobi Park, Kenya

Eland are normally quite shy creatures- this herd in Nairobi Park allowed my to approach quite a bit closer than I would normally expect. This photo was taken with a telephoto lense approximately 45 meters away from the herd.

Elephant normally find palm fronds too tough to be palatable (& digestible), so there must be something of interest hidden in there- easy to sniff out when you can browse with your nose! Taken in Amboseli.

Hammerkop. Lake Baringo Kenya

A common water-side bird in East Africa, the primitive-looking Hammerkop builds mega-sized nests in large trees that can often reach 3 tons in weight..... though who has actually weighed one remains a mystery to me!
